One Saturday each September, up to eleven teams of eight runners gather at the Snake Inn on the A57 Sheffield-Manchester road.
They are responding to the challenge to carry a full eight-gallon beer barrel across the mountainous terrain of Kinder Scout.
Although the route is short, about 3 miles, there is a 900ft climb up to the difficult boggy terrain of the plateau, and a steep, knee-cracking descent to the other side. The runners cross the finish line at the Old Nags Head Inn, in the beautiful Peak District village of Edale. Money is raised by the teams and the organisers for local causes, and the fastest team get to drink their barrel of beer.
